Dear Friends,

As of July 1st I have assumed the presidency of Roma Ovest (Rome West) for the 2004-2005 rotarian year.

The traditions of our club, as established by our Past Presidents, indicate the proper roads to follow in coordinating the activities of our association and allieve many of the concerns I have in taking this charge.

I am also comforted by the qualified assistance of the members of the Executive Council and of the various commissions. With the presidents of the commissions we have already established a general program for both internal and external activities.

As usual, I will present in September the detailed program for this Rotarian year.

I thank everybody for their collaborative efforts and I wish all of you a pleasant Summer holiday.

A Brief History of Rotary Club Roma Ovest

Rotary Club Roma Ovest (Rome West) was founded in June 1960 by a group of Rotarians who broke from the one and only Rotary Club in Rome (Rotary Club Roma). The founding members were: Dott. Antonio Ciampi, Maestro Oliviero De Fabritiis, Gen. Antonio Norcen, Dott. Giuseppe Potenza, Maestro Renzo Rossellini, L’Avv. Antonio Sorrentino, Prof. Gaetano Stammati ed Dott. Tullio Torchiani.

The Club began its activity with the following 48 members:

The group of founders began to meet with the group listed above sometime before the official founding date of the Club, not only to define the objectives of the Association, but also to define and develop the proper spirit of service that would be needed for each component.

The first official Assembly of the club took place on the 1st of June, 1960 in the "Casina delle Rose", in Rome's Villa Borghese. The first evening meeting took place the 8th of June, 1960, in the presence of the 208 District Governor, Avv. Sen. Raffaele SANNA RANDACCIO and the Governor-Elect for the Rotarian year of 1960-1961, Prof. TRISTANO BOLELLI.

For obvious bureaucratic reasons, the Constitution of the Club established the founding date of the Club as the 9th of July, 1960 (and on the same date, so too was founded the RC of Roma Sud. One month later, on the 11th of August, Roma Est). For many years there were only the following four Rotary Clubs in the Capital city: ROMA, ROMA OVEST, ROMA SUD and ROMA EST.
